The saying “comparison is the thief of joy” is so true, especially when it comes to our bodies! We’re all designed differently and our bodies react differently to exercise and nutrition. Two familiar faces from 21 Day Fix know this all too well! For weeks you watched Daniel Pipkin and Samantha Jo Harvey go through Autumn’s 21 Day Fix, 21 Day Fix Extreme, and Ultimate Portion Fix programs (if you haven’t, they are available on Beachbody on Demand). Now they’re sharing their advice on how to focus on your own progress and results while on your journey to a healthier you!
Remember Your Differences
There are many factors that determine why some people lose and gain more quickly than others. Before you begin the dangerous comparison game with a friend, family member, or the guy who sits in front of you in spin class keep these in mind: gender, genetics, lifestyle habits, natural body frame and metabolism.
“I think life in general we all try to compare ourselves with others or find recognition from others. We find ourselves focusing more on other people’s successes instead of our own. ‘How come I can’t do that’ or ‘that’s too hard for me, I’m not in shape.’ Over time you will begin to lose yourself and find out that you are still in the same spot that you were before.” – Daniel Pipkin (@danielpip__)
Limit Your Time On Social Media
“Being a professional dancer, and in this social media climate where comparison feels like it can be everywhere, I totally have experience with this! During filming, I had a tough time seeing other people’s pounds melt off while my scale barely moved. My life coaching clients often feel comparison stress in their bodies and fitness journeys, as well as in their career and relationship status.” – Samantha Jo Harvey (@SamanthaJoHarvey)
Focus On Yourself
“The one thing about fitness or exercising in general is that no one is going to tell you or push you. It has to be a burning desire. The only way you can succeed is if you focus and make all the sacrifices for yourself.” – Daniel
Make A “Truths About Me” List
“I encourage my clients to make a list of ‘truths’. What do you know to be true about your body or your fitness journey? For me during filming, when I would go into a comparison spiral, I’d pause and ask what do I know to be true in this moment? What I know to be true is my body is strong and healthy. What I know to be true is my body has allowed me to perform across the country, and kept me safe and healthy. What I know to be true is I am beautiful and capable! What I know to be true is I deserve to look and feel my best!”- Samantha
Set Realistic Goals & Remember That Results Take Time
“There will always be someone or something tempting you to stray off course. Stay firm with your decisions, do what’s best for you, and I promise you all the success you gain will only benefit others. I now make better health and fitness choices [after completing Autumn’s programs] and I spread that knowledge to everyone around me.” – Daniel
